What is a click track?
A click track is a steady metronome pulse — usually rendered as an audio file — that musicians play along with to keep perfect time. Drummers use click tracks in the studio and on stage, bands use them to sync with backing tracks, and teachers use them to build students' internal sense of tempo. Unlike a simple metronome, a click track is pre-programmed: it can change tempo, meter, and feel at exactly the right measure, so the whole arrangement is mapped out in advance.
How this generator works
Build your track from sections. Each section has its own tempo (10–400 BPM), length in measures, beats per measure, and subdivision — beat only, eighth notes, or triplets. Chain up to ten sections to map out a full song: a slower verse, a faster chorus, a 7/8 bridge, whatever the chart calls for. Then:
- Play it in your browser — the first beat of every measure is accented so you always know where the downbeat is.
- Download it as a WAV file — drop it straight into Pro Tools, Logic, GarageBand, Ableton, or onto a phone or backing track rig. WAV means no compression artifacts on the transients, which keeps the click easy to lock onto.
- Send it to your phone — scan a QR code and open your track in the Subdivide app for rehearsal.
Looking for something specific? Try a ready-made 120 BPM click track, a 7/8 metronome, a metronome with tempo changes, or a subdivision metronome.
Who uses click tracks?
Drummers recording to a grid, music teachers preparing practice tracks for students, worship teams keeping the band and tracks in sync, marching ensembles rehearsing tempo maps of an entire show, and producers who need a count-in and click stem for a session. If you need the same tempo map every time — with changes in exactly the right places — a generated click track beats tapping a metronome up and down between sections.
Frequently asked questions
Is this click track generator really free?
Yes. Creating, playing, and downloading click tracks is completely free — no account, no watermark, no limits on downloads. It's built by the makers of the Subdivide metronome app for iOS, which is where the advanced features (tempo ramps, drill counts, ensemble sharing) live.
Can I make a click track with tempo changes?
Yes — that's the core feature. Add a section for each tempo in your song and the generated track steps between them at the exact measure you set. For gradual accelerandos and ritardandos rather than instant changes, see our metronome with tempo changes page.
How do I use the downloaded WAV in my DAW?
Import the WAV onto its own track in Pro Tools, Logic, GarageBand, Ableton Live, or any DAW, align it to bar 1, and route it to the drummer's headphone mix. Because the file is uncompressed WAV, the click transients stay sharp and easy to play against.
What BPM should my click track be?
Match the tempo of the song you're practicing or recording. For building speed on a difficult passage, start 20–30 BPM below performance tempo and add a faster section — many players practice with a ramp like 100, then 120, then 140 BPM in one track.
What sound does the click use?
Short sine tones: a higher-pitched accent on beat one (2500 Hz), a mid tone on other beats (2000 Hz), and a lower tone for subdivisions (1500 Hz). Distinct pitches per role make the downbeat easy to feel even in loud rehearsal spaces.
Can I use these click tracks live or in recordings?
Yes — the generated audio is yours to use however you like, including in performances, sessions, and published recordings.
