Any numerator, four beat units
Most online metronomes stop at a dropdown of common meters. Here the time signature is two free inputs: 1–16 beats per measure over a half, quarter, eighth, or sixteenth note beat unit. That covers the standard meters, the odd ones (5/4, 7/8, 11/8), and the genuinely custom ones — 13/16, 9/2, 15/8 — that a fixed list never includes. Tempo stays quarter-note referenced (♩ = BPM), so an x/8 meter clicks at twice the number you set.
Meters that change mid-song
A custom meter usually isn't alone: the 7/8 bridge sits between 4/4 verses, or a tune alternates 6/8 and 3/4. Build each meter as its own section and playback walks through them at exactly the right measure. The preloaded track above does this: four bars of 4/4, four of 7/8, four of 5/4, all at one quarter-note tempo — and notice the 7/8 bars click in quicker eighth notes, exactly as the meter demands.
Where the accents fall
The first beat of every measure is accented, so the downbeat of your custom meter is always audible. What this tool doesn't do is custom accent groupings inside the bar — feeling 7/8 as 2+2+3 versus 3+2+2, or 11/8 as 3+3+3+2. Frequently asked questions
How do I set a custom time signature?
Type the beats per measure (1–16) and pick the beat unit (2, 4, 8, or 16) in the section form. 11/8 is beats-per-measure 11 over an eighth-note unit; 13/16 is 13 over a sixteenth.
Can the time signature change in the middle of the track?
Yes — each section carries its own meter as well as its own tempo, so a 4/4 verse can flow into a 7/8 bridge and back without stopping. Chain up to ten sections per track.
Can I choose how the beats group — like 2+2+3 in 7/8?
Not here: this tool accents beat one of each measure only. Custom accent groupings (2+2+3 vs 3+2+2, subdivided accent patterns, per-beat muting) are what the Subdivide iOS app does, and it imports tracks built here via the send-to-phone QR.
Why does my x/8 meter click faster than the BPM I set?
Tempo is quarter-note referenced (♩ = BPM), the way scores mark it. In an eighth-note meter the beat is half as long, so 7/8 at 120 clicks at 240 pulses per minute. Set the BPM to the quarter-note tempo on the chart and the click rate follows.
Can I download the custom-meter click track?
